Gender and Mental Health

SAU Gender Sensitization Committee organized a talk on “Gender and Mental Health” by Dr. Meenu Anand from Department of Social Work, University of Delhi on April 25, 2023.

Dr. Meenu highlighted the importance of understanding the concept of mental health in everyday life and spoke about the socio-cultural factors in the context of gender and mental health. Moving beyond the notion of binaries she presented the latest global as well as Indian statistics on mental health while deliberating upon the intersection of culture, gender, and mental illness from a gender perspective. She emphasized on focusing across the life-course stages with regard to mental health with thrust on gender. She highlighted the strong need to reshape the physical, social and economic characteristics of environments – at homes, schools, workplaces and the wider community – to better protect mental health and prevent mental health conditions.
